Liaohou Village an attractive overseas Chinese hometown
2022-08-30

Liaohou Village in Zhongshan's South District was built in the middle of Yuan Dynasty more than 650 years ago. It was named after its location behind a duck coop (Ya Liao in Chinese). Behind Liaohou Village rests Meiling Mountain, and in front of the village is the Shiqi River. The village has a developed transportation network and an orderly urban planning.

Rich with natural resources, ancient buildings and other elements, Liaohou Village is an epitome of the integrated development of overseas Chinese culture and landscape resources in South District.

According to the Zhongshan South District Local Chronicles, during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China period, nearly 1,000 people born in Liaohou Village lived overseas, nearly twice as many as the local population of the village at that time. It is also recorded that in the 1980s, many overseas Chinese from Canada, the United States, Australia, Fiji, Venezuela and other areas had funded the reconstruction of Liaohou School.

In recent years, South District takes Liaohou Village as a pilot site for the implementation of the Overseas Chinese House Revitalization and Heritage Preservation Program. After several months of efforts, the first renovation projects were completed at late 2021 and attracted many merchants.
